Navigating Salary Expectations in Interviews

Learn how to discuss salary expectations in job interviews to avoid early elimination from the hiring process.

Discussing salary expectations during a job interview can be tricky. Employers often ask this question early in the process to gauge if you fit within their budget.

Here’s how you can navigate this question effectively:

  1. Delay Giving a Specific Number. When asked about your salary expectations, explain that you don't have enough information about the role to provide a specific number at this stage. This keeps you in the running without committing to a figure too early.
  2. Ask for the Salary Range. If the interviewer presses for an answer, turn the question back on them by asking, "What's the salary range for this approved position?". Once they provide a range, respond with, "It would work for me". This shows flexibility and keeps you within their budget.
  3. Provide a Broad Range. If the interviewer doesn't offer a salary range, give a wide range yourself. For example, you could say, "I'm looking for a range between $50,000 and $70,000, depending on the role's responsibilities and benefits". This strategy ensures the number they are considering likely falls within your range, preventing early elimination.

After mastering these techniques, you can discuss salary expectations confidently and keep your options open throughout the interview process.
