2nd and 3rd Conditionals: Conversation Practice
Understanding the 2nd and 3rd conditionals is crucial for conveying the correct meaning. These structures help you talk about hypothetical and unreal situations. In this video, we practice using these conditionals in everyday conversations:
1. Second Conditional:
Blue: If you could be a Marvel superhero, who would you like to be?
Red: If I could be a Marvel superhero, I would like to be Iron Man.
Blue: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Red: If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would travel to Spain.
The 2nd conditional is used to talk about unreal or unlikely situations in the present or future. The structure is: If + past simple, would + base verb.
2. Third Conditional:
Blue: Would you have bought a brand new car if you have had enough money to do so?
Red: Yes, if I had had the money, I would have bought a brand-new Ferrari.
Blue: Would you have attended university if you have had the money?
Red: If I had had the money, I would have attended an expensive university.
The 3rd conditional is used to talk about unreal situations in the past. The structure is: If + past perfect, would have + past participle.
